Diablo Games and Expansions Ranked From Worse to Best

Diablo 3

Diablo 3 was released a decade after Diablo 2, which made several fans hoping to see new gameplay elements and features. However, after the game’s launch, many were sorely disappointed as the game came with several server issues, one of which was the notorious Error 37. The game also had an in-game auction house which basically made the game pay to win. Blizzard eventually addressed these issues but many fans had already lost interest by then.

Diablo Immortal

If you were part of the Diablo community, you definitely wouldn’t have forgotten the “Do you guys not have phones?” remark which was said by Blizzard Entertainment’s Principal game designer Wyatt Cheng. The game caused a lot of controversy, to say the least. Apart from the sketchy marketing, Diablo Immortal is pretty solid for a mobile game, if you put aside its micro-transactions.

Diablo Hellfire

This expansion to the first Diablo Game was created by Synergistic Software which made many fans question the credibility of Blizzard and the future of the Diablo series. However, their worries were soon put to rest with as the game stuck to the Diablo 1 format. The only concern was that the game did not feature a multiplayer mode.

Diablo 3: Rise of the Necromancer

Rise of the Necromancer was the second expansion for Diablo 3, which aimed to follow the success of Reaper of Souls. Blizzard added the Necromancer class and a new adventure zone called Shrouded Moors. Although these changes seemed reasonable for an expansion pack, it was not as successful as the first Reaper of Souls DLC.

With the Reaper of Souls expansion, Blizzard aimed to fix the issues that plagued Diablo 3. They removed the auction house and fixed all the server issues, along with adding an exciting storyline, a new class called the Crusader, and a new act. In this expansion, players confronted the Angel of Death, Malthael, and prevented it from unleashing the dark power of the Black Soulstone.
Diablo

The original Diablo was released all the way back in 1997. Players were put into the town of Tristram which was the capital of the Kingdom of Khanduras in Sanctuary. It was the first game to feature the Dungeon Crawling mechanics which was very innovative at that time. Furthermore, the game featured a multiplayer co-op mode which made it stand at the forefront of multiplayer action RPGs.  

Diablo 4

Blizzard’s latest Diablo 4 is certainly an improvement in every aspect from the previous iterations. It features refined mechanics with an emphasis on fine-tuned combat. The game is also graphically immersive which is no surprise as it is running on Blizzard’s proprietary game engine. It also features an open-world setting while also offering several build options to each class and a reliable live service, unlike the previous game. Diablo 4 certainly has the potential to be the best game in the series.

Diablo 2

The second game in the franchise was definitely a step up from the first. It offered great variety by adding a jungle setting apart from its confined dungeons. Diablo 2 offers a diverse list of character classes that players can choose from.  The game surely lives up to its name with hardcore Diablo fans regarding it as one of the best Action RPGs of all time.

Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction

Built upon the already successful Diablo 2, the Lord of the Destruction expansion made the game even more enticing by introducing fans to two new classes, the druid and the assassin. The game also introduced Baal, a new demon. Lord of Destruction was a huge success as it added to the fundamentals of what made the previous Diablo games interesting. It is no surprise that it tops our list.
