Is Jankos Retiring From Pro Play?

The League of Legends EMEA [Europe, Middle East and Africa] Championship (LEC) 2023 Summer Playoffs just recently concluded with G2 Esports winning the split. After losing to Fnatic with a 1-3 scoreline in the lower bracket, Team Heretics was knocked out of contention and will not be playing again this competitive season. This means that the Team Heretics’ Season 13 is over and that it would be spectating Worlds 2023 from the sidelines during its off-season.

Right after the series, in a post-game interview, Marcin “Jankos” Jankowski talked about what’s in store for the future and it was not all good news. Here’s what Jankos had to say about his future in League of Legends esports.

LEC Veteran Jankos Considers Retiring from Pro Play

One of the biggest news that rocked the LEC last year after Worlds 2022 was G2 Esports making changes to its roster heading into the 2023 season. Following this, G2’s jungler Marcin “Jankos” Jankowski confirmed on 22nd October 2022 that he was leaving the team. For a brief period at the start of 2023, Jankos floated the idea of retiring but this was soon squashed after Team Heretics picked him up for its roster.

Despite having a strong individual performance throughout the year, Jankos will be missing out on Worlds 2023. During the post-game interview, Jankos stated that he may not be playing next year and that he is considering retirement.

While reflecting upon the past year with Team Heretics, Jankos had heaps of praise for him teammates and acknowledged their growth. He added, “It really sucks that we cannot go forward or we cannot try again, or we had maybe not enough time and we’d never know what would happen. But we’re out now, right? So I really hope my team takes the lessons from this year and they don’t forget them going into next year.”

Jankos hoped that the team remembers what they learned together and that their paths cross again soon, whether as teammates or rivals, he was not sure.

Following this, the conversation shifted towards Jankos’ future as a pro player. His answer was not too optimistic. He said, “I don’t really know what I want to do right now. I didn’t plan on losing, so I didn’t plan on my future. I don’t know how much I have left, I’m not sure if I’m going to be competing next year or not. Maybe, maybe not. Who knows? I have a lot of time to reflect.

As a veteran player of the LEC, Jankos brings in a lot of experience playing against some of the best teams in the region and in the world. During his five year tenure with G2, he helped the team win multiple LEC titles and also reach the finals of Worlds 2019.
