All Starfield Religions Explained: Which is the Best One to Join

Bethesda’s latest space RPG has so much complex lore hidden in its expansive universe. Apart from the game’s various political factions driving its story forward, it also consists of three different religions which are built into the traits system. They all come with their own advantages and disadvantages which can impact your character’s stats.

Enlightened, Universal, and House of Va’ruun are the three religions present in the game. If you wish to be an atheist you have the option to not pick any of them during character creation. However, if you do wish to pick one, you must know that you will be locked out of the perks that other religions offer.

Starfield’s Diverse Religions

As mentioned above, the game allows you to pick between three different religions. They are:

  • Universal aka Sanctum Universum

  • Enlightened

  • House of Va’ruun aka Serpant’s Embrace

universum

Sanctum Universum: People who follow Universal believe that God is somewhere in the universe, guiding humanity towards him. The Grav jump which is an integral part of the game is considered to be the proff for God’s divine intervention. This religion was established just 20 years ago which is right around the time when the war between the United Colonies and Freestar Collective concluded. It also offers players a chest of goodies that will come handy if you are just starting out. It can be found next to Father Aquila’s office in New Atlantis. Here are its contents:

  • Sanctum Universum, Vol 1 (book)

  • Sanctum Universum, Vol 2 (book)

  • Sanctum Universum, Vol 3 (book)

  • Addichrone x2

  • Boom Pop! Orange

  • Festive Neocity Poncho

  • Med Pack x5

Enlightened: Unlike the Sanctum Universum, people who follow the Enlightened religion focus more on the humanitarian aspects rather than their divine beliefs. They have a heavy emphasis on developing knowledge with which they can help their fellow humans. If you chose the Raised Enlightened trait during your character creation, you will also get access to a chest which provides similar items. Naturally, you cannot access the Universal chest if you go down this path. You can find this chest in the back office of the House of Enlightenment in New Atlantis.

  • Charity in a Godless Universe: Part I (book)

  • Charity in a Godless Universe: Part II (book)

  • Charity in a Godless Universe: Part III (book)

  • Charity in a Godless Universe: Part IV (book)

  • Drink Pack: Water

  • Med Pack x5

  • Penicillin X x2

  • Settler Poncho Outfit

serpent

House of Va’ruun: This is almost a cult-like religion which believes and worships a celestial entity known as the Great Serpent . This mythology mentions that the Serpent was first witnessed by a passenger on a ship during a Grav jump. They believe that if they do not worship the all-encompassing being, it would devour the entire universe.

Although it does not provide you with a chest, Serpent’s Embrace offers more enticing stats like a temporary boost to your health and oxygen. However, you need to grav jump every four hours to maintain the boost as failing to do so would bring you back to your base stats. Considering the fact that the grav jump is a frequent occurrence in the game, you need not worry about your perk going down.

Which Religion Is the Best?

The answer to this question is highly subjective as all three religions in the game comes with its own quirks and features. Furthermore, it also depends on the type of built you choose during character creation as it is entirely possible to negate all three options.

However, speaking from a gameplay perspective, the Serpant’s Embrace cult seems to offers the best in-game perks, as the chests that the other two religions offer does not really have an impact as you progress through the game. If you are confident that you can tolerate the absurd cult and its members, it seems like the best possible option.
