TFT Set 9.5 Horizonbound: Item Updates, Categories Explained

Riot Games made it very clear that with Teamfight Tactics (TFT) Set 9.5 Horizonbound, it is not just focused on the mid-set, but is extremely committed to the qualify of life changes to different aspects of the game. In this mid-set update, Riot Games is adding two new regions and a number of new units and along with it, a drastic change to the item system of TFT.

The publisher noted, “We’re making huge quality of life changes to our Item system that will leave it in a better state for many sets to come.

The changes to the item system in TFT includes six new items, three adjusted items, a new support item class, an update to Artifact Items (that was previously called Ornn Forge Items), and many more.

Here’s all you need to know about TFT’s item system update.

Riot Games is changing TFT’s item system

In TFT, items are the most important method to power up your champions. There is nothing more satisfying than getting the perfect components to finalize your carry unit’s build. Riot said, “On the flip side, every TFT player has experienced getting unlucky with components and being unable to build any items for the champions they want to play.”

It noted that one of the big obstacles for these are the more supportive items like Zephyr and Zeke’s Herald. While these items are incredibly powerful in the late game, they do not prove to be that useful in Stage 2 or 3 and therefore, when you notice Giant’s Belt, Negatron Cloak, or Tear of the Goddess, they are not very appealing.

As a result, in Horizonbound, Riot Games is moving supportive items into a new “uncraftable category, and filling in the recipes with some new toys to power up a variety of champions.

According to Riot Games, these are its primary goals for the item system rework:

  • Make item categorization easier to understand

  • Give each class of champions a variety of viable items to build that offer broad ranges of stats.

The second half of TFT Set Nine (9.5) is called Runeterra Reforged: Horizonbound and Riot Games dropped teasers for Ixtal

New Item Categories in TFT Set 9.5 Horizonbound

In the item rework, Riot Games will be updating the TFT item categories into the following:

  • Core items: Core items will bear the standard, craftable items made from the base components. Each of these items will focus on powering up the holder unit in different, exciting ways.

  • Radiant Items: Upgraded versions of core items

  • Artifact Items: These were previously called “Ornn Artifact” items and they are uncraftable items that you get from Augments.

  • Support Items: Support Items are Riot Games’ new item class that will contain uncraftable items focused on providing teamwide support and non-selfish outputs. It will include old items like Shroud of Stillness and Locket of the Iron Solari, and also new items. Notably, all Support items shall have a uniform 250 Health, and will be much more powerful than their core item versions. Additionally, Shroud of Stillness and Zephyr can no longer be equipped during combat starting with Horizonbound.
